UO is giving employees the option to take kids to work, virtually

Take Our Kids to Work at the University of Oregon is back this year, virtually. It will have a new format and a new approach but the same opportunity for university employees to share their workplace with their child(ren).

For many years, the UO has participated in National Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day by hosting its own on-campus event, which allows employees to share their workplace with their children.

“Unfortunately, we have had to cancel this event for the past two years due to COVID-19,” said Jen Mirabile, Senior HR Programs Coordinator. “During its return, the event will be offered virtually over several weeks so that employees and their children, or even their entire families, can explore the university together through activities and employee profiles.”

Under the new format, the Event will run from April 28 to May 27, rather than just one day. Weekly activities will keep kids entertained for a month while learning what it’s like to work at college, Mirabile said.

An activity kit will be available starting April 12. The kit includes an activity kit, coloring pages, crayons and model airplane supplies that kids can use to win prizes. There will also be other fun keepsakes for the kids. Supplies are limited to the first 100 requests and kits will be sent to employees via campus mail.

The UO Take Our Kids to Work event includes a variety of activities organized to share the exciting work happening at this university and engage the children of faculty and staff members. The activities are intended for children from 9 to 13 years old and can be carried out in the comfort of their own home.

During the event, participants will have the chance to win prizes. Each time they complete an activity, watch a video, or read an employee’s profile, they can submit answers to a series of questions and enter sweepstakes.

The event will launch on April 28 with its first featured activity. New activities, videos and employee profiles will be added weekly. Each activity will include a recorded presentation from an OU employee that highlights their amazing work and connects to their work at OU.

Activities will include assembling a model airplane, dissecting a strawberry, and planning a day of travel, and will involve UO Libraries, the Athletics Department, and the Mapping Department of geographic information sciences, to name a few.

In addition to the activities on offer, attendees will have access to videos on UO research such as artificial intelligence, volcanoes, product design, and teenage behavior. A variety of employee profiles will be shared so attendees can learn about college jobs from an academic and career advisor to a boat operator.

“We’re excited to bring this event to life in a new way and allow kids to begin to understand all of the great work and people here at the University of Oregon,” Mirabile said.

Entrants can enter a sweepstakes to win prizes when they submit completed activities and other forms. They increase their chances of winning by submitting multiple entries as they complete activities, watch videos and learn about UO employees. Each activity submitted counts as one entry into the prize draw.
