5. Rebel Lures Pop-R Topwater Popper Fishing Lure
The Rebel Pop-R has been the standard by which all topwater poppers/chuggers have been judged for over three decades. This lure has earned anglers hundreds of thousands of dollars in bass tournaments while abandoned. After “The Secret Bait of the Pros” was revealed in a major bass fishing magazine, the Pop-R returned to the line and sold over a million lures in the first year. The Pop-R’s profile and action make it a favorite of anglers around the world. It can be worked quickly across the surface like a panicked baitfish or shaken slowly to mimic a nearly dead meal, and all speeds in between.
Benefits/Super easy to use bait for surface fishing – especially for beginners.
The inconvenients/Popper baits don’t sink very well and this could make it difficult to attract fish that aren’t in shallow cover
Conclusion/A great lure to pass by when the weather starts to change
Is the color of the lure important?
Yes and no. Largemouth bass will eat just about anything they can find in their mouths and will often prey on other small fish such as pumpkinseed, minnow and perch. Some other rare small animals they eat include frogs, insects, crayfish, insects, and even smaller birds that land in water.
However, it has been observed that largemouth bass are most attracted to the color red and red ends up being a very common color with bass bait options. So if nothing else works, maybe try red!
How do I know if I’m using the right bait?
The better question is whether you are using the wrong bait. There are so many options for bass lures and it can get confusing, especially when two completely different types of bait can have similar characteristics. The truth is, you don’t really know when a specific bait will be “the right bait”. You can, however, observe your location, weather, local people, and many other factors to determine how you will outsmart the fish and catch one. If something works, write down the circumstances and add it to your notebook.
Why didn’t you mention crankbaits?
Lures are great types of lures for fishing, but I haven’t included any on the list due to the way I’ve observed they are used in most cases. Crankbaits are great for scouting unfamiliar waters, however, this may require in-depth knowledge of the type of prey the bass is feeding on, as you will likely need to match the rough color of live fish to make your particular crankbait effective. . for use as a main line fishing lure.
