Sasaki and Miyano follows the budding relationship between two titular characters – Sasaki and Miyano. Miyano is a closed fudanshi who serves on the school’s disciplinary committee. Sasaki looks like the bad-boy type but in reality he is a really sweet and confident senpai. The two meet when Sasaki intercedes on Miyano’s behalf to end a bullying situation. Instantly gaining Miyano’s admiration, Sasaki also finds himself attracted to Miyano quickly after meeting him. To get closer, he asks Miyano to teach him BL. Thus, an adorable romance blossomed between the two boys, reaching the hearts of many in the anime community.
Anime Trending spoke with the director of Sasaki and MiyanoShinji Ishihira, who shared some ideas behind the anime series and the anime’s creative process.
Anime Trending: What were your first thoughts on the source material?
Shinji Ishihira: I was taken by the beauty of the work the first time I saw it. The characters’ expressions really draw you in, and the lack of any real “villain” as the story progresses makes for a pretty enjoyable read. There are important story beats such as Sasaki and his sister’s past, Miyano’s story with Makimura, and Hanzawa’s situation at home, which made me read all along. story. The color pages were also impressive
What aspect of the manga was most important for you to convey or improve on the anime?
One of the main goals was to give the same impression that the source material offers in a video format. We focused on coloring and working the atmosphere, the sense of life and the feeling of youth in our performances and sets. I think showing Assistant Director Ueno other works that offered concrete examples of what we were trying to do really helped us get the feel we were looking for. We also emphasize hand movements and cats.
Speaking of color, there are plenty of stylized moments that feature shapes and patterns instead of landscapes in the background. What was the process of deciding the color combinations for all these shots like?
These design effects are what we call “decorative art”. When I was working on super lovers, I wanted to bring the stylized manga backgrounds to the video and had luck trying various methods, so I used them here as well. Some scenes just use rays of light and the like for effect, but there were many points where I wanted to emphasize more exciting emotional moments or add more dazzling effects. It is also useful for comedic mannerisms.
During the moving moments of the show, the “camera” deliberately fades. What kind of meaning or feeling is this effect supposed to convey?
Our camera work is mostly determined at the storyboard stage, but the finer details like blurring and the like are the result of a lot of trial and error by Assistant Director Ueno.
Yusuke Shirai and Soma Saito had amazing chemistry playing with Sasaki and Miyano respectively. What were the qualities that led to their casting and what kind of directions did the two seiyuus give?
There was already audio drama for this series before it was made into an anime, and the casting for it was done before I got involved. Often, for various reasons, there are different voice actors for audio dramas and anime, but I was glad we were able to keep the same cast.
What do you remember about the relationship between Sasaki and Miyano?
Miyano provides a good mix and match with his cute looks but more childlike personality, and while caught up in his own fantasies, he’s a fun kohai character who has good interactions with his friends and senpai. Sasaki seems creepy at first, but he’s goofy in a really adorable way, and that mismatch between his appearance and his almost heroine characterization is really nice. The excitement that this cute kohai character and their admired senpai provide as they slowly grow closer and realize their feelings is what makes this story great.
All final comments to fans watching Saskatchewan and Miyano?
I’m glad this series is generating a great response. I hope people can forget about the stress of their daily lives, at least while watching this.
