Retired Parks Worker Writes Picture Book – Times-Standard

Cal Poly Humboldt Press announces the release of “Lift Up the Sky!/¡Levanten el Cielo!”, a bilingual picture book by local artist and retired parks worker Barbara Dolan-Wilkinson.

“Raise the sky!/¡Levanten el Cielo!” is a story full of nature about working together to achieve great things. Four animals from around the world come together to solve the problem of a low sky that needs fixing. Watercolors accompany this environmentally conscious picture book.

For many years, Dolan-Wilkinson worked at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, where she found joy leading children on nature hikes. She enjoyed watching their eyes sparkle as she taught them the magic of the redwoods through her story, “Lift Up the Sky!/¡Levanten el Cielo!”, inspired by a Sno-homish story she heard during of a storytelling festival.

In line with many other children’s books published by The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt, “Lift up the Sky!/¡Levanten el Cielo!” is a bilingual publication. The Spanish translation was done by Judy Dolan and Esteban Guevara.

This new book contains pages of facts and information about various types of redwoods, as well as resources to learn even more about the importance of redwoods. There’s also a free double-sided activity sheet filled with fun facts, coloring activities, and a redwood forest scavenger hunt to download and print from home.
