PORTALES, NM – April 8, 2022 – Eastern New Mexico University announced the expansion of the ENMU Reads summer reading support program to 10 libraries in the Midland/Odessa area. This builds on the success of ongoing partnerships in libraries across the state of New Mexico.

In addition to the Midland/Odessa Regional Libraries, ENMU has partnered with Tahoka County Library, Lamb County Library, and Yoakum County Library in the Lubbock area. New partner libraries join other libraries in New Mexico and West Texas for a total of 69 ENMU partner libraries to support the region’s largest summer education program, Reading summer.

“Reading is an essential skill for learning and the cornerstone of a good education,” said ENMU President Patrice Caldwell. “ENMU appreciates these partnerships with libraries in our area to promote this summer reading program.”

ENMU Reads provides partner libraries with certificates, bookmarks, coloring pages, activity books and posters featuring Ralph the Greyhound to encourage students to read during their summer break. To further support the program with grand prizes for young readers, ENMU has teamed up with Domino’s Team Bam in New Mexico, Whataburger in Texas and New Mexico, the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Albuquerque Isotopes, and the El Paso Chihuahuas.

“Participating in Summer Reading helps children, tweens and teens develop positive attitudes about reading. They acquire a love of reading and maintain their reading skills during the summer holidays. Cody Wesner-Ellis, supervisor of library services, outreach and marketing for the Albuquerque Public Library, said. “Albuquerque Public Library is thrilled to partner with ENMU through ENMU Reads again this year to encourage children to read in our summer reading program.”
