The Department of Transportation is expanding its “Summer Streets” open street corridor by two miles, to East Harlem, the city announced.

The city operates the car-free corridor from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park for three Saturdays each August. Now it will extend to East 109th Street, providing more than eight miles of car-free streets for walking, biking and free activities, according to the announcement. It promises 120 activities.

The dates are August 6, 13 and 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Lafayette Street, Center Street and Park Avenue, and will include free Citi Bike day passes available on August 6.

“Our streets belong to all New Yorkers, and I’m thrilled to restore the Summer Streets program to three full Saturdays and bring it to East Harlem for the first time,” Mayor Adams said. “That’s exactly what our public space is for: making fun activities available for free to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers.”

The extension to Harlem provides a bit more car-free space for an event that hasn’t grown significantly in its 14 years. As Streetsblog reported in 2012, 2014, 2017 and again this year, the city could do more than three weekend days for a few hours. Others agree:

So the distance expansion is at least something. But since Montreal, Paris and other cities have very long stretches of car-free road all summer, every day, New York can certainly aim higher. For now, however, there are three days with plenty of programming. See the full list below:
